Management said no to bringing HDU monument work in-house; we had never done it. I ordered material samples on my own, taught myself a new CAM program at night, routed practice tiles, and showed the salesperson. We won the job, and I delivered a double-sided carved sign in two weeks at half the outsourced quote.
The 40-foot corner blade sign and the gothic entrance canopy on Canal Street, 3D designed and engineered by me from construction drawings while the hotel was still bare structure; every anchor point dimensioned and bolted before the masonry existed. The canopy is layers of rectangular aluminum tube and decorative trim extrusions, crowned with individual clam-shell extrusions for the gothic crest, with hanging acrylic tiles that slide into a custom aluminum track so the LEDs glow through their CNC engravings. It is all still hanging over Canal Street.
West End Plaza wanted a sign shaped like a sailboat with tenant panels the owner could swap. I designed the aluminum frame and a back-lit panel system the owner could re-tenant without a service call, then directed fabrication. Eleven years later it is still sailing.
For the movie Logan, we built a 15-foot round Harrah's sign with two-inch sequins as the pixel dots, thousands of them shimmering like a low-res jumbotron. It is on screen for about half a second. I have never been so proud of a blink-and-you-miss-it.
Shade sail structures for the Audubon Zoo, engineered and built at OPA, and the load calculations for sails at the Dallas Zoo. Aluminum tube nodes, TIG welded, sized to hold canvas against Gulf weather.
